Crisis in Goma: Updated information as of Feb 17th

Urgent Need for Support!!!

The city of Goma has fallen to the M23 rebel group. While the violence has paused, the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.

  • 2 million people are struggling to survive as water supplies run dry, electricity is intermittent, and food is nearly impossible to access.
  • Markets, humanitarian aid supplies, and stores have been looted. Those without money have no way to get food or water.  Food prices have sky rocketed in the last 10 days.
  • Women and children remain in the greatest danger.
  • Schools have not resumed, despite M23’s push to reopen them for optics. Teachers and families have resisted, knowing that sending children back to school is unsafe.
  • Hundreds of thousands who fled war zones to displacement camps have now been forced out, told to "go home"—but most no longer have homes.
  • This past weekend, M23 seized the nearby city of Bukavu (population: 1 million), further worsening the crisis. Bukavu was one of Goma’s key supplier of resources, leaving the people of Goma even more isolated.

Our Response & The Tchukudu Community

Despite the devastation, the Tchukudu compound remains secure—a beacon of safety for a few in a city unraveling. This includes:
Jonathan Holiday School (though classes are currently on hold)
Tchukudu Kids Home, where children are finding refuge
Tchukudu Women's Center, offering support through Cathy Cleary and her organization and her donors.

Many of the children staying at the compound were already part of our programs, while others were found alone on the streets, separated from their families. We are working tirelessly to reunite them with loved ones, but the process is slow and difficult.

Meanwhile, Kizungu faces an impossible task—deciding who we can take in and who we must turn away, as the need far exceeds our resources.  As this situation evolves we will update this page. As of this past week end the project was taking care of a total of 68 children.  We have no idea how to decide at this point what that number should be going forward but for the time being we have sent funds to cover hopefully a month's worth of food, water, and medications.

To summarize: Water, Food, Shelter and Security to those at the Tchukudu home is our main priority today.  The situation remains fluid and we will pivot as needed.

How You Can Help

With humanitarian groups and most NGOs forced to evacuate, emergency funds are desperately needed. Our project is relying 100% on us.  Your support can help us provide:
💧 Clean water
🥖 Food
🏥 Medical aid
🛡️ Safe shelter

Please stand with Goma in this time of crisis. Every donation makes a difference.

A huge thank you to those that have already sent funds, they have been sent to the projects and helped greatly during the initial military violence.

We are looking forward to the day we can resume classes and families are back together living with their basic needs met.  We have not lost hope for a brighter future for the children and women in Goma and those at our Tchukudu Compound.
